The department started as a General course in 1985. Honours course was initiated in 1994.
The department has a Seminar Library for meeting the demands of the students.
The department conducts State, National and International level seminars throughout the academic session.
The department encourages students for participating in different academic programmes, cultural activities, extension activities and excursion.
The students after passing out can study Post-Graduation or can appear for competitive exams like NET, SET, WBCS, School Service Commission and College Service Commission.
